About Digital for Youth
Digital for Youth is an initiative dedicated to mitigating the digital divide in Belgium. Alarmingly, almost half of the Belgian population faces the risk of digital exclusion, as highlighted by a recent study from the King Baudouin Foundation. Digital for Youth harbors a vision where every child and young person in Belgium has safe and effortless access to a laptop.
The approach of Digital for Youth is multifaceted and socially responsible. They gather used laptops and other IT equipment and breathe new life into them, ensuring these resources reach those who need them most. Their method is characterized by the following pillars:
- Cost-effectiveness: ICT hardware is collected from companies without incurring any charges.
- Environmental sustainability: Each refurbished laptop represents an avoidance of 160 kg of CO2 emissions, signifying a considerable environmental benefit.
- Data security: They provide certificates that guarantee the secure erasure of data and responsible recycling.
- Social impact: The revitalized ICT hardware is allocated to various social projects across Belgium, making a tangible difference in the community.
Through these efforts, Digital for Youth is not only providing essential technological tools but also contributing to a greener and more inclusive future.
Social impact
Since its launch in 2019, Digital for Youth has distributed more than 23,300 laptops to social organizations and schools. Approximately 250 social organizations have been supported with laptops since 2019. These social organizations were selected through an independent jury from the King Baudouin Foundation.
Ecological impact
Ecological impact reduction by extending the life of 1 donated laptop by 4 years.
Moreover, Digital for Youth collects all types of ICT materials including laptops, desktops, printers, screens, servers, etc. ICT materials which are no longer reusable are recycled.
